WINTER ID KEY

You selected:  An alternately-branched tree
with single terminal buds.  Large trees with
rough bark, but upper branches with
smooth bark.  Buds are NOT sticky.
Note:  There are 3 choices on this page!

  12.  Buds are shiny and about 1/8 inch long.
           Side buds hug twig close.
           If so, try quaking aspen.

             or

  12.  Buds are dull, not shiny, 1/8 to 1/4 inch long.
           Side buds point slightly away from twig.
           If so, try bigtooth aspen.

             or

 12.  Buds are brick red and smooth.
           Look for left over fruit parts.
           If so, try basswood.
