tree with single or absent terminal buds,
and with papery, peeling bark.

  5.  Bark is white, underside brown or pink.
        Smallest twigs are purplish or dark brown,
        with white spots.
        If so, try paper birch.

          or

  5.  Bark is yellowish or bronze-colored.
        Smallest twigs are gray and taste like wintergreen.
        If so, try yellow birch.
