You selected:  An oppositely-branched
tree with slender, gray or brown twigs.

  5.  Terminal buds are sharp and pointy.
        Twigs are gray or medium-brown.
        Bark is smooth and gray on young trees,
        but thick with ridges on old trees.
        If so, try sugar maple.

          or

  5.  Terminal buds are blunt and brownish.
        Twigs smell bad when crushed.
        Bark is smooth and gray on young trees,
        but loose and upward peeling on old trees.
        Usually found along rivers or planted in towns.
        If so, try silver maple.
