You selected:  An oppositely-branched
tree with slender, reddish twigs.

  5.  Terminal buds are blunt or rounded.
        Twigs often with a gray or blue "powder" on them.
        Bark is medium brown and tight.
        Usually a small tree with poor form.
        If so, try boxelder.

  5.  Terminal buds are reddish and blunt.
        Female flower buds, when present, are clustered.
        Bark is smooth and gray on young trees,
        but flaky or shaggy on older trees.
        If so, try red maple.
