with stout twigs and branches.

  3.  Chocolate brown terminal bud. 
        First side buds  close to terminal.
        Leaf scar clearly notched at top.
        Bark is tight, does not rub off easy.
        If so, try white ash.

          or

  3.  Chocolate brown terminal bud. 
        First side buds set back 1/8 to 1/4 inch.
        Leaf scar slightly notched.
        Bark easily rubs off.
        Usually grows in a swamp.
        If so, try black ash.

          or

  3.  Chocolate brown terminal bud. 
        First side buds right next to terminal buds.
        Leaf scar straight across on top.
        Twig ends somewhat flattened.
        Branching looks droopy.
        Bark often has horizontal cracks.
        If so, try green ash.
