tree with single or absent terminal buds,
and with textured, layered bark.
Note:  There are 3 choices on this page!

  6.  Bark layers light & dark (red & white).
        Terminal bud clearly angled to one side.
        Tree form is "vase-like."
        If so, try American elm.

          or

  6.  Bark layers light & dark (red & white).
        Older twigs with corky ridges and growths.
        Buds very sharp-pointed.  Uncommon tree.
        If so, try rock elm.

          or

  6.  Bark layers are the same color.
        Inner bark is quite slimy when chewed.
        Buds are dark, almost black.
        If so, try slippery elm.
