ROADWEEDS OF THE UPPER PENINSULA
Docks & Sorrels (Rumex spp.) |
People seem to notice roadside docks when the fruits turn a rich brown in late summer. The flowers and fruits grow on spikes that might be 18-20 inches long. Spikes hold dense collections of many seeds and frequently have several short branches, held close to the main spike. The seeds don't cling to clothes. These "sorrels" shouldn't be confused with "wood sorrels" (Oxalis spp.). Wood sorrels are small plants usually with small yellow flowers, leaves that look like clover, and have a delightful sweet-sour taste.
